Excel export opening as HTML table in Notepad

If your Excel exports are not opening in Excel, you can change this in the browser configuration. 

In Internet Explorer 10, this is done with the following steps:

1. From the menu select Tools >> Internet Options.
2. Click on the Programs Tab.
3. Click in the 'Set Programs' button.
4. Select 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
5. Click on the xls file extension.
6. Click the 'Change Program' button.
7. Select the Excel program and save.

You can ignore the warning about the file being in the wrong format.
